Local students get a sushi lesson with RA Sushi

Last week RA Sushi came to visit Garrett Heights Elementary Middle School to do a sushi lesson with a class that had been working on a unit about exploring Asian cultures both past and present. Between the classroom teacher and the resource teachers (myself included – library media) they put together arts integration unit.

The students got to sit down and learn from Sushi Chef Andy of RA Sushi about the history behind sushi and some of the basics behind making California Roll and how to make a Candy Roll. From there the students learned how to use chopsticks so they could serve themselves some sushi.
The Candy Rolls where a bit of a shocker for the students. They couldn’t believe putting together fruit roll ups, rice krispy treats, gummy worms among other items and then topping it with chocolate sauce and whip cream. Now before you turn your nose up and knock it- you have to try it. It is surprisingly yummy!

The students loved the sushi and couldn’t get enough- of both sushi rolls! Many of the students had never had sushi before and where always afraid to try it- now they can't wait to have more!
